If you live and play in the Powell River area, you have likely seen some trail and bridge names in your travels, here is a list of some of the best known places and the origins of the names.
Squirrel Crossing: at the completion of the original crossing a squirrel appeared and promptly ran across the entire 100 foot span.
Marathon Trail: named after Roger Taylor an original member who ran marathons into his 70’s
Gibralter Bluffs: when viewed from below the bluff have the appearance of one of the pillars of Hercules
Tony’s Point: Originally named Wednesday Point, it is the halfway point between Haywire Bay and Mowat Bay, named by the Wednesday Hikers as a convenient turn around point. It was later renamed Tony’s Point.
Rievelly’s Pond: named after a Wednesday walker Bill Rievelly who let hikes until his mid 80’s
Rosabridgida: Named after hiker Rose Paganni a “Wednesday Walker” who slipped off the old log crossing here.
Lost Mushroomer Bridge: named after a lost mushroom picker, later renamed Koleszar Crossing after one of the original members.
Molly’s Reach: Named after Molly Sands who slipped on the original log crossing at this location
Doughnut Crossing: a location where a hiker named Vicky regularly left doughnuts for the crew
Gentle David: a very pleasant picnic site named in memory of Roy and Doreen Hewitts eldest son.
David Lam Falls: named after the 25th Lt. Governor of BC (1988-1995) in appreciation of his gift to establish a botanical garden. (Asian garden at the UBC Botanical gardens, (1992)
GOYA Bridge: “Get Off Your Ass” named after a trail building group ion Ontario
